Czech Republic Country Guide

Czechia is a country in Central Europe. Its neighbors are Poland, Slovakia, Austria and Germany. The Czech Republic was officially created on January 1 1993. From 1918 to 1992 (except several years during WWII) it was a part of Czechoslovakia. The other part exists now as Slovakia (full name: Slovak Republic).

Czechia is the official one-word name of the Czech Republic. In 1993 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in its memorandum to to all Czech embassies and diplomatic missions recommended to use the full name "Czech Republic" only in official documents and titles of official institutions. In all other cases, the one-word name Czechia should be preferred.

Scientific article about the word "Czechia"

Language Country (short) Full Name Citizen (m) Citizen (f) Adjective
English Czechia Czech Republic Czech Czech Czech
Czech Česko Česká republika Čech Češka český, česká, -é
Slovak Česko Česká republika Čech Češka český, česká, -é
German Tschechien Tschechische Republik Tscheche Tschechin tschechisch
French la Tchéquie République tchèque Tchèque Tchèque tchèque
Spanish Chequia República Checa Checo Checa checo, checa
Russian Чехия Чешская Республика чех чешка чешский, -ая

Initially (in years 1993-1996) Czechs did not like the name "Česko" (Czechia in the Czech language), later most of them accepted it, because there was no alternative, and today "Česko" is used in 99% of all Czech newspaper articles. Czech it out: MF Dnes, Hospodářské noviny, Právo, Lidové noviny, Blesk (tabloid).

Even the Czech state radio is called Rádio Česko (Radio Czechia), although 20% of Czech strongly refuse to pronounce the word Česko (and Czechia in English), and those 20% prevent the state agency Czech Tourism from using their own domain VisitCzechia.com, registered for the eponymic campaign.

Also, the National Geographic's Czech edition is called National Geographic Česko (Czechia).

Using the word "Czech" as a name of the country is a total grammatical nonsense, unparalleled in the English language.
